To walk or to write, that is the question

Three weeks into January. Time to assess progress toward my New Year’s goals.blog walker

Want to know what I’ve discovered? My goals are in direct conflict with one another. Yup. I mean, what was I thinking?

What are those two opposing goals? Walking more and writing more. The trouble, of course, is that one requires sitting on my butt at the computer for hours at a time and the other requires that I …uhm… don’t.

Since I no longer teach school, I’m not doing yard duty and the Hokey-Pokey every day. Getting enough activity every day has been a challenge. I do 45 minutes on the elliptical four times a week, walk, do yoga, but it’s not enough. How do I know? The scale is inching up over the past few months. Oh, and I’m monitoring my steps with a new fitbit.

You see, just to get to 8000 step minimum goal I’d set for myself yesterday, I had to walk around while checking emails on my smart phone.   And I had to jog in place or dance all the way through Jon Stewart last night. Whew.

The writing goal? I intend to make serious, quantifiable progress in rewriting my NaNo novel. I will submit a chapter or two to my critique group every month with an eye toward finishing this second draft by year’s end.

Tread-Desk

This treadmill desk is an option, of course.  But until I win the lottery, I’m guessing that dancing during the nightly news, Antiques Road Show and Downton Abbey will have to do.

I’ll keep you posted.

  1. Well, if you have a smartphone you can use a dictation app. That way you can walk, and talk. After you’ve finished recording your thoughts you can send it to yourself in an email. Voila, already typed you! 😉 😀

      1. Well, it would require editing after it’s been imported into a word document, but that could be done after your walking. My kids do this all the time with their school essays. It saves them hours of typing. Just a thought though!

  2. Nice new theme! And I know EXACTLY what you’re talking about. My writing went by the wayside the years I was training for marathons and whatnot, and my butt’s getting bigger while I edit. I do stand up at funky desk I’ve made. Can’t hurt, right? RIGHT?!?

  3. RIGHT! Standing is better than sitting. On the other front, I am making decent progress on the editing goal of one submission per month to LMW. January done. February sent in today. Now to work on a column. 600 words. How hard than be?
