     “When did I get all those wrinkles?” my Irish grandmother asked me. She’d just had cataract surgery and hadn’t seen herself clearly in decades. Of course, I’d been watching her age one day at a time for my whole life. But for her, the change was abrupt and shocking. Then she told me this:

“You know, I may be an old lady on the outside, but inside I feel like the same person I did when I was thirty.”

     I was about thirty when she said that and it stuck with me. At thirty I still had a lot to learn—how to be a wife, a mother, a good human. And now forty years later, I’m still learning and still vain enough to care about those wrinkles. And I’m still trying to maintain what my dad called a “girlish figure.”
     While I’ve been retired from teaching for over ten years, for fifteen years I moonlighted by contributing left-leaning personal and political commentary to the Opinion page of the Nevada Appeal, my local newspaper. Writing and sharing what I write became a habit. So, now as I’m celebrating my first seventy years on the planet, I’ve independently published my first novel, US, NOW AND THEN. Once again, I’m seeing if one can indeed teach an old broad some new tricks.
     The world continues to change and I believe we must grow and change to meet its challenges. Not to mention keep up with our grandkids. I’m exploring my potential for change, for growth, and for learning–even at my advanced age. I’m simply not done yet.
     You’re welcome to join in the journey or merely sit back and watch as I fall on my face or fly. Either way might be entertaining.

      1. my pleasure… but this is perhaps a silly observation…
        except that I didn’t have one for about 4 years and couldn’t work out why I had no followers..
        I couldn’t find a “follow” button on your blog…
        just thought I’d mention it in case it’s missing.
        Sorry if I’m just blind!

  15. I remember walking with my mother when I was a kid and we’d run into someone she hadn’t seen for ages. When we left, she’d often say to me–with a laugh at herself–“She’s gotten so old.”

    I understood the joke at the time, but now I really understand it.

Unfortunately, my life has gotten very complicated lately–and likely to remain so for a few months–and I fear I cannot participate at this moment.
