Book Report: Local history, local author

The Better Half: A Novel of the Nevada Divorce Ranch Era by P.W. Borgman

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Having lived and worked in Northern Nevada–mostly Carson City–for nearly fifty years, I was intrigued by a novel about the Nevada Divorce Ranches. Yes, a six-week residence in Nevada could quickly and neatly end a marriage. This noir-style story set in the 1950s is filled with shady, complex (not always likable) characters and a good amount of suspense. Lots of local history as well. I loved all the locales readers get to visit, including Virginia City, Stewart Indian School, Frank Town, and Washoe Valley. In fact, because of all that “local color,” I convinced my Carson City book club to choose it for a summer read! Of course, I then had to turn to Turner Classic Movies to watch “The Women” and its musical remake, “The Opposite Sex.”
